| A Brief History |
|
The club was formed in March 1988 as Oldham Athletic Ladies FC as part of the Football Community Scheme. Trials were held on the stadium, which at the time was an astro surface, resulting in the club joining The North West Women's League in 1990. During the 1990's the club moved rapidly up the leagues and formed junior teams from where many of the present senior team started out. In Kelly Dean the club has one of the most prolific goalscorers in the women's game, resulting in her winning the “Goalden Boot” award for season 2000/01 when she scored 27 league goals in the Women's FA Premier League (Northern Division). In 1998 the club began playing at the home of Curzon Ashton FC in the town of Ashton-under-Lyne which saw the name of the club move to its present form. The club began its first season in the newly formed Northern Combination League in season 1999/2000 and finished a credible third to winners Bangor City. The following season the club achieved its ultimate ambition of reaching the top of the women's pyramid by winning the Combination League and did so in style by winning their first 17 matches. In the 2000/01 season in the AXA FA Women's Premier League they exceeded all expectations with the runners-up position attained, having pushed Leeds United to their final game of the season, and with the majority of players who have been with the club since its inception. There was, in some quarters, an air of expectation for the following season, but a poor start meant that they were always going to play “catch-up” with the eventual League Champions, Birmingham City. However, after the first six games the team returned to form but fell away in the final two games of the season finishing in third place. In the same season the team reached their first ever Women's FA Cup quarter-final round, beating National Division side Southampton Saints away from home in the 5th round, before going out to Tranmere Rovers, also away from home. Season 2002/03 ended with the team once again in third position and for the second season running went out of the Women's FA Cup at the Q-F stage, this time losing 1 - 0 away to Fulham. In season (2003/04) the team didn't fair as well as they had done in previous years in the League and also exited the Women's FA Cup away to Midland Combination side Nottingham. However, the season's disappointments were all put to one side when the Club were awarded the inaugural Fair Play Award at the League Presentation Dinner while Kelly Dean shared the Golden Boot Award for the second season running, this being the third time in four seasons that she has achieved this position. Kelly was also nominated as one of the top six players in the League, the only player outside of the National Division to be included. Season 2004/05 was one of disappointment for the ladies as they struggled to find the form that had them “there or thereabouts” in previous season's, but survive they did to compete in the Northern Division for another season. In the summer of 2005 the members took the decision to change their name once again, this time adopting the Club name as a whole, becoming Curzon Ashton Ladies FC at the end of June in readiness for their move into their new home, the £4m Tameside Stadium, a Conference compliant stadium including a separate third-generation full-size all-weather facility. The ground was built for the Club by Tameside MBC assisted by a £500,000 grant from The Football Foundation. The first season playing under their new name and in their new home, proved to be a traumatic experience as the Club struggled for most of the season against relegation but a spirited performance by all members of the squad in the latter stages of the season, with several of the younger players being thrown-in at the deep end and proving their worth. Season 2006-2007 Junior teams at under-10 and under-12 age level were formed at the start of season 2006/07. These were added to over the next few seasons so that we have all age groups taking us up to senior squad at 16 years of age. The Club begun to build a foundation that will only be of long term benefit for the Ladies teams. Season 2007-2008 Season 2008-2009 |
